Philosophy

The philosophy of Fully Alive Coaching is based on this premise: every person is born with a God-given ‘calling’ that remains the same throughout their lifetime.  Many things can and do change – jobs, careers, relationships, finances, circumstances – but the “blueprint” a person is born with stays the same.  The “original design” is always the template to return to when rediscovering and recreating your life.  The life cycle of a butterfly reflects the process we all go through each time we go through a “death” and “resurrection” – which is the reality of life for all people.  The one thing you can always count on is change!  All beginnings are hopeful, with opportunities to become more in tune with your calling and increasingly authentic in the way you live it out.

What makes a person thrive–become fully alive?

The word is derived from the Latin “vocare”, meaning to “call“ from which we get the word “vocation”.  Here are some profound quotes from the book “48 Days to the Work You Love”:  “A calling is something you have to listen for, attuning yourself to the message. Vocation then is not so much pursuing a goal as it is listening for a voice. Before I can tell my life what I want to do with it, I must listen for that voice telling me who I am. Vocation does not come from willfulness but from listening… When we have “heard” clearly, we can then fulfill our calling by being excellent at whatever God created us to be.”

What does “calling” really mean?

The tangible benefits of a fulfilling life – happiness, confidence, enthusiasm, purpose, financial provisions – come from successfully accomplishing the things you really enjoy and have a passion for.  If we are driven by a misguided sense of perfectionism rather than led into our calling, we will try to fix all our problem areas in the hope that we will be satisfied when everything is “fixed”. Not even possible! That is a prescription for frustration and de-motivation.  Focusing on your strengths with most of your time and energy will unlock your potential, give you confidence and enable you to “soar” in life.

Fully Alive Life Coaching is in agreement with the values and philosophy of the 48 Days network of life coaches.

In his book, “48 Days to the Work You Love”, life coach and teacher Dan Miller says, “Money is ultimately never enough compensation for unhappily investing one’s time and energy. There must be a sense of purpose, meaning, and accomplishment.” He quotes author Richard Foster who believes “The work of our hands and of our minds is acted out prayer, a love offering to the living God.”  In other words, as we clearly understand and live out our ‘calling’, our life becomes a lived-out prayer, an offering of worship to God and of service to other people.  The world will be short-changed if we get side-tracked on the highway of life and never really live out our true calling – in other words, if you don’t do “you”, the benefit of the qualities of life you uniquely offer will be lost. That’s a real tragedy. Many people lack a clear sense of “calling”, of who they were really meant to be.  Everyone has doubts and life can deal some heavy blows to our hopes and dreams – but it is never too late to “find yourself” and choose a new course.  Many people testify to the fact that the most difficult experiences of their lives turned out to be the impetus for major inspiration and transformation.

In the words of artist Leonardo da Vinci, “Where the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art.” Human beings are works of art in process. Becoming the person you were born to be is no small undertaking.  We all need other people to encourage, guide and instruct us along the way, helping us to think creatively and act decisively.  That’s where life coaching comes in.

Sanctified ignorance is the belief that if we love God and have committed our lives to Him, everything will work out…Sanctified ignorance is no excuse for a life out of alignment, lacking joy, fulfillment, and a clear sense of accomplishment…Look at how God has uniquely gifted you in your skills and abilities, personality traits, and values, dreams and passions. It is in these that we find the authentic path designed for us for a purpose-driven life.” – Dan Miller,”48 Days to the Work You Love.”
